The Table of Contents Worksheet

What is it?

The Table of Contents Sheet (ToC) is the cornerstone of the Diligence methodology. It is a benign worksheet that once added to any spreadsheet gives the user key information about their file, whilst holding important information about the workbook that can be used to monitor how the file is used and changes over time. An additional Summary Report can optionally be run at the same time to give extensive AtAGlance details on the health, status and contents of the file.

How does it help my company control its spreadsheets?

When the Table of Contents is updated, summary information is also sent to a central internal location. This metadata is accessible to both the user and to specified managers so that the size, location, complexity, changes, and other important factors about their important spreadsheets can be monitored. No part of the spreadsheet itself is sent or stored, which means the Table of Contents and optional Health & Risk RAG Report sheet can be applied confidently and safely to even the most sensitive of files.

 

What benefit is it to the spreadsheet owner?

The Table of Contents sheet contains a mass of useful information for the spreadsheet owner. It supplied summary information on each worksheet, such as its size, a list of all its formulas and any macros, plus warnings about unexpected items such as cell errors and formulas that look like they have been accidentally overwritten with values. The sheet also contains summary data such as the overall level of complexity and a list of links to other files. You can also use the Table of Contents sheet  to jump directly to any other visible worksheet and there is space to add your own comments or explanations on who, when and how the file is used. At the bottom of the sheet is a summary of all the structural changes that have been made to the file, which is refreshed whenever the Table of Contents sheet is updated. The optional Health & Risk sheet gives a simple RedAmberGreen status to key aspects of the file.
